I have been playing guitar since the mid-80s. Fixing, buying and trading guitars has always been my main hobby - maybe because it's just too much work to form and maintain a band. I'd rather be a behind-the-scenes kind of player.
Throughout the years, I've been to various guitar shops and have contacted numerous guitar companies for different reasons. One strange pattern I've always noticed is the fact guitar companies (and companies that make guitar accessories) are somewhat defensive. They try to blame the consumer when there's something wrong with the guitar, usually calling it a "set-up" issue. Sure, a proper set-up is important, but I've found numerous problems on my guitars that were clearly factory issues: bad fret leveling (which creates excessive buzz), poor internal shielding (which creates excessive pickup noise), loose locking nut (a very common problem with Floyd Rose-equipped guitars) and so on. Yet, many times guitar companies have refused warranty service saying the problem was normal. "Don't put the action too low;" "Increase the noise gate;" "Stretch the strings properly" have been some of the many excuses not to have my guitar repaired under warranty.
Any company, no matter what it does, should make customer service and quality control a high-priority (if not the TOP priority). By seeing common problems among so many guitars, I decided to post what I consider unbiased reviews on YouTube. I don't take sides or lean toward any brand. I just think there's a lot of poor quality control when it comes to guitars and really bad (and unfair) customer service. The people who pay the price are the consumers - particularly young players who are really excited about getting their first guitar.
Rather than looking at my videos as harsh criticism (hey, don't forget I ALSO emphasize qualities), guitar companies and critics should look at my videos as honest, constructive criticism. If the automotive, retail, food and so many other industries welcome consumer feedback with an open mind (and take action!), why can't guitar companies do the same?
That's the goal of my YouTube channel: help players (particularly metal players) make an informed decision when buying their gear and (hopefully) help guitar companies improve the quality of their instruments.
I've had many people in my life who helped me without expecting anything in return. I have the same mentality. It makes me happy to know my videos have helped so many guitarists make informed buying decisions. And better yet - it's nice to hear feedback from people across the globe - all the way from Brazil to Japan, or from Romania to the United States.
